Each photo appeared like some surreal, semi-conscious vision. Indeed, I recall from my own travels across China that Chongqing City, where Zhang was based, does tend to exude a sort of otherworldly air. Chongqing is located in the heart of Central China, which makes it neither here nor there in terms of its geographic role. And despite the city proper’s urban characteristics, Chongqing is framed by rugged mountain terrain and a series of rivers, giving it an isolated feel. Zhang’s unique imagery captured Chongqing’s out-of-place ambiance perfectly. Well done!
