Readiness is all.

I was struck by this sentence:

“This dichotomy, this tension between the personal and the universal are the essence of a good photograph.”

I believe that making a photograph is a personal endeavor and that you have to shoot a lot of film and really learn to “see” the results with an objective eye in order to find something that may be universal. As you mentioned, it was your husband and friend that noticed the Universal Theme in your photograph. I certainly see it now that it has been pointed out.

It can be difficult to “see” a possible universal theme when looking at my own body of work because it IS so personal. I have trouble with that. I am SO attached; especially if it is a photograph of someone dear to me.

It’s a relief to read that someone with your talent also shares the same frustrations that I do. The process can be a little unnerving but I can relate to that sudden “knowing” that you’ve captured something and begin to quieten down again.

I really enjoyed the article and it made me rethink my own dilemma. I suppose you can’t force a universal theme so shoot, shoot and shoot some more. They can’t all be universal but they can all be personal and that makes them special even if only to the photographer.

I know you will be moving. That’s a ten on the richter scale of life events. You might try to snap the movers and movees! Never know, you could unearth and reveal some of the bit by bit shocks in the evolution of mankind by showing one specific family in flux.
